Digital Edge to Become Canada’s First J Press Site Print E-mail

A Mississauga company called Digital Edge Print and Media Services Ltd. is to become the first operation in Canada to install Fujifilm’s J Press 720, which is a sheetfed inkjet press designed for commercial printing
.

The J Press, or Jet Press 720 as it is branded in other parts of the world, was first installed into North America in 2011 by a Michigan-based commercial printer called Gilson Graphics, which runs HP Indigo presses and 40-inch sheetfed presses. In addition to Gilson, Fujifilm has placed the J Press technology at five beta sites in Japan.

Digital Edge is planning to install its J Press sometime this February, which is when the Mississauga printer states it will also put a 40-inch, 6-colour Heidelberg CD press, with aqueous coating, on its production floor.

In addition to various commercial printing processes, Digital Edge is heavily focused on in-house data capabilities with mailing services, which were also recently boosted by the installation of a 9-inch UV printing system. The company, which describes itself as a provider of printing, finishing, binding, fulfillment, design, and letter-shop services, also recently installed a new Kirk-Rudy line and, for die-cut label production, a CX 1200 label printer and FX 1200 finisher.

Fujifilm’s J Press, unveiled during drupa 2008, jets water-based inks and can print onto most offset coated and uncoated papers. The system is based on Fujifilm’s Dimatix SAMBA piezoelectric print-head technology, which reaches a 1,200 x 1,200 dpi with four levels of grey scale. It prints at 2,700 sheets per hour with a maximum sheet size of 20.8 x 29.5 inches and a printable area of 20.5 x 28.3 inches.

We deal mainly with agencies and trade. Its looking like there may be a bit of a lineup as we have had a ton of interest in the machine. The exiting part I don't believe was mentioned is that we can now run up to 16pt stock and by June they plan to have it run fully variable data, when we test ran it at Gilson it was only 4 minutes from the time we hit print and the job was coming off the press perfectly registered and colour accurate.
