A group of students from Ryerson University’s Graphic Communications Management program, under their RyeTAGA banner, won the coveted Helmut Kipphan Cup after presenting their journal at the 66th annual TAGA conference in Fort Worth, Texas.

The achievement marks the third time in six years that RyeTAGA has been awarded the Kipphan Cup, having also won it in 2010 and 2008. This year, RyeTAGA bettered the always-powerful student team from California Polytechnic State University by a slim margin to take the cup.

Post-secondary printing programs from across North America, as part of a TAGA Student Chapter initiative established in 1985, compete in an annual journal competition hosted at the annual Technical Association of the Graphic Arts conference. In addition to compiling and preparing some of its research, students are involved in every aspect of the journal’s production.

The 2014 RyeTAGA team, led by professor Dr. Martin Habekost, produced 100 percent of their journal in the School of Graphic Communications Management (GCM) program’s dedicated Heidelberg Centre in downtown Toronto. While planning and fundraising began early in the school year, the RyeTAGA team spent most of their winter reading week in March producing the final product to be presented at RyeTAGA.

The inside pages of the 2014 RyeTAGA journal were printed with a Xerox 700 and Heidelberg Quickmaster 46, while the cover was produced by a Heidelberg Printmaster 74. It was then perfect bound on a Muller Martini Amigo system. The journal also features augmented reality directing readers to a series of videos about how it was produced, in addition to interviews of researchers who contributed to the journal.

“It is great for us to wrap up our year with this achievement,” says Faris Abu-Kwiek, a fourth-year GCM student, who served as RyeTAGA’s Multimedia Director. “This journal was a group effort and if it wasn’t for the generous sponsors and all of the help we got from the general members [of RyeTAGA] it would not have been possible.”

Twelve GCM students travelled to Texas for the conference, including nine RyeTAGA executives and four general members. In addition to Abu-Kwiek and Habekost, this year's RyeTAGA executive team includes Co-Presidents Mark Brejnik and Alyssa Szeto; Alina Gula, Fundraising Director; AFM Rupal, Marketing Director; Erin Luu, Creative Director; TakPo Chu, Editorial & Production Director; and Steph Murray, Finance Director.

Sponsors of the 2014 RyeTAGA effort includes Spicers, Wikoff, IAPHC Toronto Craftsmen Club, Graphics Canada, Cascades, RP Graphics and Williamson Print Materials, as well as Ryerson’s P-FACS, Communication and Design Society, Faculty of Communication and Design and the School of Graphic Communications Management.
