Canada Post, postal workers resume negotiations

May 9, 2025  By Nithya Caleb

Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) have resumed negotiations. The parties were supposed to meet twice last week in the presence of the mediator, but there’s no update on the meetings.

Negotiations are resuming after discussions broke off in March when the parties had been unable to come to a resolution.

The collective agreements between Canada Post and CUPW will expire May 22. If an agreement isn’t in place before then, CUPW can strike. If that happens, this would be the second time within six months that a strike or lockout disrupted postal services in Canada. In November/December, postal services came to a halt after workers hit the picket lines.

According to Canadian Press, the union initially asked for a 24 per cent cumulative pay bump over four years, but Canada Post notched an $845-million operating loss in 2023.

Earlier this year, the Canadian Printing Industries Association (CPIA) stressed the need for a clear and forward-looking strategy from Canada Post through a letter to Jean-Yves Duclos, then minister of public services and procurement.
