On November 29, SaltWire Network announced it will immediately close the printing press for the Cape Breton Post, citing the aging nature of the press – “that would have required costly upgrades in the near future,” the company says – as a major factor in the decision. As a result, printing of the Post will move to the company’s press in Halifax, which prints all of the company’s other Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island publications.
“SaltWire had made significant investments in Sydney to try to maintain its printing in the past year. But the press is old technology and required considerable investment to bring it up to an appropriate quality level,” according to the company statement published on the Cape Breton Post website. “The Halifax press is amongst the highest quality newspaper presses in the world and has adequate capacity to absorb the extra work.”
The company explains readers will see a “more colourful paper with sharper images. In fact, because of some challenges over the fall, Cape Breton Post readers have already had an opportunity to see the enhanced quality as the Post was printed for several weeks in Halifax.”
The move affects 14 full- and part-time employees. The company says it is working with the Communication Workers of America union, which represents the workers, to ensure employees’ rights and benefits are handled appropriately and according to their contracts.
