Gordon Graydon wins Phoenix Challenge

Teams from Gordon Graydon Memorial Secondary School in Mississauga placed first and second at the annual Phoenix Challenge International Flexographic Skills Competition.

This year’s competition was held in Charlotte, North Carolina, at the end of March, and featured 19 teams with two students each from across North America.

The Gordon Graydon team of Martin Jeung and Humaira Imtiyaz placed first in the competition, while the Gordon Graydon team of Luvit Chumber and Vishal Monteiro placed second. Third place went to a duo from Asheville High School, Noah Seidenburg and Andrew Fox.

The 2 1/2-day competition focused on five areas of testing, including: Operating a flexo press, prepress, plate making, written knowledge, and flexo math skills. In addition to receiving medals, a plaque and the Harper Cup for displaying in their school, members of the first place team each receive a $1,000 scholarship. Members of the second place team each receive a $500 scholarship.

In addition to the strong showing by four Gordon Graydon students at this year’s event, Peter Belanger, an instructor for with the school, was recognized for his contributions with Diann Teague Award, named after the founder of the Phoenix Challenge International High School Flexographic Competition.
