Flash Reproduction and C.J. Graphics produced the top two award-winning projects in the 2013 Unisource Canada Design and Print Excellence Awards, which were celebrated late last week in downtown Toronto.
This was the inaugural Uvu National Design and Print Excellence Awards program, but Unisource Canada – through past programs like the NUARs and ULAs – has a long history of recognizing the combined efforts of design and printing achievement. Entries into the Uvu program, which must have been printed on paper purchased from Unisource Canada in full or in major part between September 2012 and June 2013, were judged in 12 separate categories.
A panel of five independent judges began reviewing the entries in June 2013, including: Sharie Hunter of Western Sky Creative in Calgary; Vida Jurcic of Hangar 18 Creative Group in Vancouver; Fidel Peña of Underline Studio in Toronto; Tara Shaughnessy of Montreal’s McGill University; and Stüssy Tschudin of Forge Media + Design in Toronto.
Flash Reproductions of Etobicoke, Ontario, received one of two Awards of Excellence for its production of We Are Tonic, working with the creative of Blok Design – printed on Neenah Classic Crest, text and cover.
C.J. Graphics Printers & Lithographers, also of Etobicoke, won the second Award of Excellence for its product of Marimekko, With Love, based on creative from Concrete Design Communications. This 96-page plus cover brochure (6 x 8.5 inches) for the Marimekko exhibit in Toronto’s textile museum was printed on Domtar Cougar, text and cover.
The Uvu program also presented five Judge’s Choice Awards, two of which were printed by Flash Reproductions, in addition to Rhino Print Solutions of Richmond, BC, Hemlock Printers of Burnaby, BC, and Somerset Graphics of Mississauga.
In addition to the categories considering design and print together, Unisource Canada also presented awards within a Best of Print category, which included work by Vancouver’s MET Fine Printers (two awards), Andora Graphics of Toronto, Mi5 Print & Digital Communications of Markham, Flash Reproductions, and C.J. Graphics.
