Wayzgoose Holds Bookarts Fair in Grimsby

May 5, 2014  By PrintAction Staff

Every year on the last Saturday of April, the Wayzgoose society brings together people active in book-related crafts, including letterpress printers, printmakers, paper makers and hand bookbinders, who gathered at the Grimsby Public Art Gallery.

The daylong, free event took place this year on April 26. It marked the 36th year of the Wayzgoose organization, which began as a small gathering of friends and colleagues from the Canadian printing industry. The group’s first event attracted some 300 visitors.

The Wayzgoose April 26 fair drew in more than 2,000 visitors from across Ontario, Quebec and the Northeastern United States. This year’s event also played host to a few travelers from as far away as Europe and Japan to take in the craft of bookmaking, including demonstrations of paper making, book binding, calligraphy and paper marbling.

Wayzgoose other main annual activity is the production of an Anthology by various participants. Sections, known as signatures, are hand bound into a limited edition volume – 115 copies in 2014. Sales of the Wayzgoose Anthology are used to offset operating costs of the organization. The Grimsby Public Art Gallery has copies of the most-recent Anthology on sale for $80.
