Canada’s national statistical agency Statistics Canada recently installed a Standard/Horizon automated AFC-564A folding system in its print department.

Purchased from Laval, Quebec-based KBR Graphics, the Standard/Horizon AFC-564A is a computer-controlled folder that combines feeding and registration with touchscreen controls. The operator, KBR explains, can select from 14 preset folds or set up to 200 custom folds, making the folding system suitable for challenging production environments. KBR describes the AFC-564A as producing consistent results through “automated setups, user-friendly interface, rugged construction and proven reliability.”

Statistics Canada says it has seen an increase in jobs over the years but at decreased run lengths, and as a result, it needed to find an approach to automate its finishing for “simple and super-quick changeovers,” while producing high-quality folds.

“We do a lot of make readies and some really small run digital jobs, so this folder is a perfect fit,” Perry Dorris, centre manager at Statistics Canada.

A provider of digital and offset, print finishing and bindery solutions, KBR Graphics represents a range of manufacturers, including Standard/Horizon, Graphic Whizard, OKI, Challenge and Perfecta, among others. It is also the exclusive Canadian distributor of RMGT – RYOBI MHI Graphic Technology sheetfed offset presses.

“Our relationship with Standard/Horizon is 30 years strong. Their constant innovations and trustworthy technology has definitely proven itself throughout the years. We have many customers that are either steadily operating decades-old Standard/Horizon equipment or upgrading to newer versions of the same machines,” said Karl Belafi Sr., President at KBR Graphics.
