RP Graphics Installing Agfa M-Press Leopard

January 22, 2014  By PrintAction Staff

RP Graphics Group of Mississauga, following last year’s purchase of Canadian Impact Imaging, continues its growth in the large-format printing sector with the installation of an Agfa M-Press Leopard.

The installation of the M-Press Leopard began in the second week of January, as the company was in the midst of creating a new production layout for its entire 60,000-square-foot facility, which also includes two Agfa Titan large-format machines and a Durst Rho 800.

In February 2013, RP Graphics purchased Canadian Impact Imaging, a 16-year-old large-format provider that used to take in RP Graphics’ overflow work.

“Adding the [M-Press] allows us to become more efficient for our existing clients and to have the scale and scope to develop new opportunities,” says Marc Fortier, President of RP Graphics. “So it is an affirmation of our presence in this [large-format] market segment.”

RP Graphics has also reached a unique beta-site agreement with Agfa Canada, which builds large-format inkjet systems in a Mississauga plant directly across the street from RP Graphics. While the M-Press is an outright purchase made by RP Graphics, the printing company is currently working with Agfa to test new print-heads on one of its Agfa Titan machines purchased around two years ago.

“We participate in dialogue with them as to where the market is going. We see it as a two-way street and a very positive relationship,” explains Fortier. By testing within a live production environment, RP Graphics is able to provide Agfa with insight about where the large-format market is heading and what new features could be integrated into future machines.

Agfa’s M-Press Leopard is four-colour industrial-scale flatbed inkjet system that runs at 295 square metres per hour in what is classified as high-quality mode and 171 square metres per hour in fine art mode. “The M-Press Leopard is not a test for us,” continues Fortier. “We are taking a piece of equipment that is established in the marketplace.”

In late-November 2013, PrintAciton magazine named George Mazzaferro, Chief Executive Officer of RP Graphics, as the Printing Leader of the Year in the 8th annual Canadian Printing Awards program.
